Engine Block
The engine block, also known as the cylinder block, is the foundation of an internal combustion engine. It’s typically made of aluminum alloy or cast iron and serves several crucial functions:
- Houses the cylinders and their components
- Contains the water-cooling system
- Incorporates the crankcase
The engine block’s metal construction provides strength and efficiently transfers heat from combustion to the cooling system.
Cylinder Head
The cylinder head sits atop the engine block, sealing the cylinders. It contains:
- Combustion chambers
- Valves
- Camshaft (in overhead cam designs)
Pistons
Pistons are cylindrical components that move up and down within the engine cylinders. Key parts include:
- Piston crown: Encounters significant pressures and temperatures
- Piston ring grooves: Hold the piston rings
- Piston skirt: Guides the piston within the cylinder
Crankshaft
The crankshaft converts the pistons’ linear motion into rotational motion. It’s connected to:
- Connecting rods
- Flywheel
Camshaft
The camshaft controls the opening and closing of the valves. It features:
- Lobes (cams) that actuate the valves
- Timing gears or chain connecting it to the crankshaft
Valves
Engines typically have two types of valves per cylinder:
- Intake valves: Allow air/fuel mixture into the cylinder
- Exhaust valves: Allow exhaust gases to exit the cylinder
Fuel System Components
- Fuel injectors: Spray fuel into the cylinders or intake manifold
- Fuel pump: Delivers fuel from the tank to the engine
Ignition System
For gasoline engines:
- Spark plugs: Ignite the air/fuel mixture
- Distributor (in older designs): Distributes voltage to each spark plug
Additional Components
- Oil pan: Reservoir for engine oil
- Water pump: Circulates coolant through the engine
- Timing chain/belt: Synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft rotation
Understanding these components and their functions is crucial for diagnosing engine issues and performing maintenance. Each part plays a vital role in the engine’s operation, working together to convert chemical energy into mechanical power.
